TANZANIA PARTICIPATION  IN THE 55TH IAEA GENERAL CONFERENCE

 

TANZANIA SIGNS COUNTRY PROGRAMME FRAMEWORK (CPF) FOR 2012-2017

 
 
The United Republic of Tanzania Delegation attended the 55th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference. The delegation was led by Honourable Prof. Makame Mbarawa (MP), Minister for Communication, Science and Technology. The Honourable Minister gave his Country statement on the first day of the Conference. In his statement the Honourable Minister addressed the Conference that Tanzania appreciates the IAEA and Global Threat Reduction Initiative (GTRAI and will remain committed to the implementation of the relevant international nuclear safeguards, safety and security and will make all efforts to ratify all relevant international legal instruments.   United Republic of Tanzania  and the IAEA  have signed the 2012-2017 Country Programme Frame (CPF) on 21st  September 2011. The signing ceremony took place at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. Ambassador Matern Lumbanga , the Permanent Representative of United Republic of Tanzania to the IAEA, signed the CPF on behalf of the country, expressing his country's commitment to the implementation of the CPF for socio-economic development of the country through peaceful applications of nuclear technologies. TANZANIA CTBTO NATIONAL DATA CENTER EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN   DAR ES SALAAM

Senior representatives of the 153 Member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and more than 1,400 delegates and participants from around the world attended this annual five-day event to review the work of the past year 2010 and to set the agenda for the year ahead. Topics on discussion n this year include nuclear security that remains an extremely important issue for all States; Nuclear Energy; following the Fukushima Daiichi accident, there was speculation that the expansion in interest in nuclear power seen in recent years could come to an end. However, it is clear that there will, in fact, be continuous and significant growth in the use of nuclear power in the next two decades, although at a slower rate than in the previous projections; Nuclear Application in the area of food and agriculture; one major success story deserves special mention: the eradication of the deadly cattle disease rinderpest. Rinderpest is, in fact, the first animal disease ever to be eliminated; and the Agency's technical cooperation activities. New resources for the Technical Cooperation Programme as a whole rose to 127.7 million dollars in 2010 from 112.2 million dollars in 2009. Nuclear safety was the largest area of activity overall, followed by human health, and then food and agriculture. Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission is  hosting the Tanzania National Data Center (INDC) for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban-Treaty Organization (CTBTO).   The center is housed at the TAEC zonal office at the COSTECH building in Dar es salaam. The tasks of a the NDC include a mixture of the following: monitoring of the status of the IMS/IDC, contributing to further refinement of the IDC processing, and evaluating the data provided by the IDC. The NDC will have the capability to process raw data provided by the IMS, combine IMS data with additional data to achieve higher accuracy, and discriminate the nature of an event. The Center will also be involved in  the evaluation of the quality of all the IDC products, so as to be able to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall system.
