The Tanzania delegates in IAEA 54th General Conference
The United Republic of Tanzania Delegation attended the 54th International Atomic Energ Agency General Conference. The delegetaion was lead by Ambassador Martens Lumbanga, Permanent representative to United Nations, Geneva. Senior representatives of the 151 Member States of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and more than 1400 delegates and participants from around the world attended this annual five-day event to review the work of the past year and to set the agenda for the year ahead. Topics on discussion this year include measures to protect against nuclear and radiological terrorism, nuclear safety and security, the uranium production cycle and the Agency's technical cooperation activities.In his address to the delegates of the 54th IAEA General Conference, Director General Yukiya Amano summarised the Agency's activities and achievements in the 10 months since he assumed office and covered a wide range of issues from nuclear energy to safety and agriculture.The IAEA's Scientific Forum on Cancer in Developing Countries: Facing the Challenge opened today in Vienna, Austria. The Forum is was  held in conjunction with the General Conference and  examined issues with regards to the problems of cancer in developing countries and the Agency's work on cancer care and control. Director General Yukiya Amano opened this year's Scientific Forum with a call to unified action to fight the cancer epidemic in developing countries.
He emphasised the fact that although the IAEA's role is important - involving radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, radiology and medical radiation physics - the Agency is just one element in the system, since cancer care also encompasses prevention, diagnosis, and education and training.
The Tanzania delegation also had an opportunity to discuss the on going IAEA technical cooperation and prospects for the new programme cycle
