TANZANIA ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION (TAEC)

The Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) recently conducted a one-day seminar on uranium and radiation protection for Dodoma regional leaders.The seminar was held on 14 April, 2010 at the African Dream Conference centre in Dodoma.The main purpose of the seminar was to equip the leaders with the knowledge of uranium and radiation protection so that they can easily explain it to the general public. Misconceptions and other myths have surrounded the public due to uranium exploration which is going on in the region. For this matter TAEC took the action to educate top leaders so that it could be very easy for them to educate the general public to ensure that they fully understand the whole issue. A team of four nuclear experts from TAEC led by the Director General Prof. Iddi Mkilaha conducted the seminar.

Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission participated in the 5th exhibition on higher education, science and technology that were held in Dar es Salaam for 28th to 30th April 2010. TAEC participation is part of our strategies for public awareness and public education on Nuclear Technology Applications. One of the objectives of thios year exhibition was to provide opportunities for higher education and science and technology institutions to publicise their core activities in the areas of teaching, research, consultancy, performance and future prospects., A total of 72 participants including Tanzania Universities, research institutes and companies dealing with education and research, participted colleges . TAEC conducted a workshop on Radiation Portal Monitors for the operators at the Dar es Salaam Port. The training comprised the theory and practical parts in the folowing topics. Workshop Introduction and overview, Basic concepts of Radiation Protection, Detection, Prevention and Response to acts Involving Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material, Categories and Characteristics of Instruments, Introduction to Radiation Detection Instruments, Introduction to Radiation Portal Monitors, General Theory of Operation for the Radsentry RPMs, System Operation and Alarm Response andPractical Demonstration of Detection, Alarm Response.
